Sex beast is refused parole

Sunday Mail, 29/05/2005

A SEX beast has been denied parole after a campaign by one of his victims.

Paedophile John Porteous, 71 - dubbed the Beast in the Belltower - was jailed for eight years in 2002 for abusing two boys in the 60s and 70s at the Quarriers Village, near Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire.

The former house father used a loophole caused by changes to indecency laws to have three years knocked off his sentence and was due to be released this year.

But the Parole Board for Scotland have refused his application and he will not be allowed parole until next year at the earliest.

Last night, one of his victims, businessman David Whelan, 46, said: "I'm pleased that the parole board have taken this decision".
